like this: download expired R7688
r8108: avi/openDML muxer: Should work mostly fine
Crash when loading video format that previously loaded? See if this helps?
x86 Cpu? Running 64-bit?
Easy test: If your computer is enabled to boot from CD. Download Parted Magic <- click
* The one you want is with X86_64 kernel. Burn the Parted Magic live cd on cd and boot your computer with it. Failed to boot: no 64-bit support.
* Boot failed: try this version: Most people will only need this file: Boots OK: computer is x86 32-bit intel compatible
* Boot failed: try this version: older than a Pentium III class, such as an i586 or a PII with only one processor. Boots OK: single core cpu 32-bit intel computer. These 3 failed to start: your computer is not an x86 CPU!

Working fine here parallel to 2.5. Wouldn't it be less work for you if you created an overlay ( https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas ) ?
