The following table shows which input audio formats Avidemux supports. If the information in the “Decoder” section says “built-in”, it means a decoder for the format is included in the Avidemux source code and you have nothing to install. If the decoder is not built-in, Avidemux can optionally use an external decoder for the format, if it was compiled with support for it.

Audio encoders

In the open source world, several audio codecs are available. For creating AVI files, the general practice rule is to use the LAME MP3 encoder. The reason being is that it is very high quality and is widely supported by nearly every video player. If you are concerned about patent issues on MP3 format or want audio of even higher accoustic quality, choose Vorbis instead.

AAC

Advanced Audio Coding is the audio coding standard defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as part of the MPEG-2 specification. It is considered to be “state of the art” in general audio coding and the successor of MP3. Compared to MP3, AAC provides higher quality music with approximately 30% less storage space or bandwidth. AAC provides up to 48 full-bandwidth audio channels with sample rates up to 96(nbsp)kHz, plus 15 low frequency (limited to 120(nbs…

This section of the documentation is designed to help outside (and inside) code writers quickly figure out where a patch or feature needs to be written for, as well as generally provide an overview of the source files and their purposes. Files in Avidemux tend to do more than just one task, so most information here will not always describe the full range of a file's functions.

Avidemux uses built-in decoders for video decoding, mostly from the libavcodec library from FFmpeg. It does not use any external decoders(nbsp)(ndash) for example, it uses built-in FFmpeg MPEG-4 for video encoded with Xvid, there's no option to use external Xvid decoder. External FFmpeg is not used either.
